The Designer

Dell C. Fox was born on the banks of the Hudson River in New York City. Growing up on a portion of Italian composer Arturo Toscanini’s estate, her love of the arts was nurtured from a young age and following in the footsteps of her great grandfather, legendary architect John Mervyn Carrere. While studying art, religion, and French at William Woods College, she accepted a challenge to delve into jewelry making from the head of the art department.

After graduating, she continued her education at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Santa Monica and New York City, and under the locally renowned Ross Lew Allen in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She narrowed her interest to classical jewelry—inspired by ancient Greek and Roman fabrication techniques and designs—while studying at New York’s Jewelry Arts Institute (JAI.) Always continuing to learn, she continues to hone her craft at JAI today. Her earliest designs tended to reflect her love of nature, featuring flowers, raindrops, and bamboo stalks. The influence of natural beauty of her home in Santa Fe and her time spent in Southeast Asia can be gleaned as well. Her time spent in Bali has rubbed off on her aesthetically, emotionally, and spiritually, and these influences are clearly represented in many of the designs.

SOME KISS WE WANT

There is some kiss we want with
our whole lives, the touch of

spirit on the body. Seawater
begs the pearl to break its shell.

And the lily, how passionately
it needs some wild darling! At

night, I open the window and ask
the moon to come and press its

face against mine. Breathe into
me. Close the language-door and

open the love-window. The moon
won’t use the door, only the window.
